The country is roughly divided into seven regions: the capital region, the west, the south, the north, the east, and the Kirin Forest. Because of the long-standing “Silence” policy and factors such as terrain and resources, the economy is developed along the western coast and based mainly on industry and commerce, with a high urbanisation rate, while the east is more backward, dominated by traditional villages and workshops.
