When the Final Battle first broke out, Sunset Shimmer knew nothing about it. She only sensed that no news had come from Equestria for some time, and every portal to Equestria had either failed or been shut. A sense of foreboding began to haunt her. After the '''Starlight–Discord uprising''' failed, Discord found the '''magic notebook''' through which Princess Twilight Sparkle and Sunset Shimmer had communicated, and gave it to Starlight Glimmer; having made contact with Sunset Shimmer, Starlight told her everything that had happened in Equestria. Because time passes at different rates, Sunset Shimmer realised that several years had passed in Equestria during her few months, and that the world she knew had been turned upside down.

After the initial shock, Sunset decided to support the resistance. She considered bringing her friends — the other-world counterparts of the bearers of the Elements of Harmony — to Equestria to help, and she considered letting humans intervene directly in Equestrian affairs. In the end she decided to support the resistance alone: Sunset Shimmer believed that sending her friends into a world that had nothing to do with them would be irresponsible with their lives, and that human intervention would only make the situation spiral further out of control.

By then every portal to Equestria had been destroyed or sealed. In order to build a stable portal again, Sunset Shimmer and her friend '''human Twilight Sparkle (Sci-Twi)''' began researching Equestrian magic — in particular the seven magic crystals they had recently found in the Everfree Forest. After blowing up half a school laboratory they moved the experiments to Twilight's basement. Twilight and Sunset realised that the crystals were not energy storage devices but transformation devices that had been programmed in advance; the operation of magic even has certain similarities to a computer program.

Building on Twilight Sparkle's earlier research, Twilight and Sunset partially cracked the way the portal was made. Having produced a portal whose destination they could not confirm, they placed it in an abandoned factory building in Canterlot City where magic was unusually strong. Walking through it with an uneasy heart, Sunset Shimmer found herself in an apartment; after talking with the pony who lived there, she understood where she was — [[自由小马利亚]].

Shortly after the New Ponyville Declaration was signed, Sunset Shimmer was elected interim Prime Minister of Free Equestria. It seemed only natural: she was capable, and the conflicts between the various factions had been reconciled because of her. Everyone was satisfied — except Sunset herself.

Thanks to the mismatch in the flow of time between the two worlds, Sunset Shimmer could move between them with relative ease without missing too many important matters. She had to look after her daily life as an ordinary girl in Canterlot City — studying, working part-time, socialising — while also serving as interim Prime Minister of Free Equestria: attending meetings, reviewing reports, running a country. Her life was cut in two by a single portal, and this plainly exhausted her.

Sunset considered staying in Equestria for good, but she could not bear to leave her friends and her life on the other side; and abandoning Equestria was even harder to accept. Fortunately, although her friends each had their own views on what Sunset was doing in the other world, they were still willing to give her as much support as they could, and Sunset Shimmer was deeply grateful for it. She believed their friendship was unbreakable and strong enough to overcome any difficulty. But this also made her more anxious — that if something went wrong, her friends might suffer undeserved harm because of her. She worried that her actions might drag her innocent friends into trouble.

At the same time, Sunset Shimmer was also torn and doubtful about where she belonged: who was she, really? In what role should she spend the rest of her time? Canterlot City had her friends and the scenery she loved; Equestria was her homeland, and the creatures suffering under the Triumvirate's dark rule were waiting for her to save them. Perhaps, on the day victory came and Equestria returned to normal, she would be able to lay down those responsibilities and return to the life she hoped for.

But could she really have her wish?
